The defendant was bailed to an address in Dublin

THE local magistrates court has heard how police in Newry intercepted a package that contained an estimated £1200 worth of unauthorised medicinal product.

The fact was related in the bail application hearing of one Ysac Silva of Railway Close Dublin who appeared before Newry Magistrates charged with attempted possession of an unauthorised medicinal product namely, GLP1 medicine.

The court would hear details of how on October 22 police in Newry were alerted to the presence of a suspicious package by staff at a premises in the city.

A police constable addressing the court would explain how upon opening the package officers would locate 56 EpiPens containing the GLP1 medicine which as was explained to the court is a weight loss drug not currently available for licence in the UK. An estimated appraisal put the cost of the medicine at £1200.

The defendant Silva was subsequently arrested in relation to the charge. Although police explained that they were objecting to bail in Silva's case on the grounds that he may flea the jurisdiction of Northern Ireland given that he has an address in Dublin Deputy District Judge Archer was willing to grant bail in the case subject to a number of conditions.

These being that he is to surrender his passport to police and that he is to report on a fortnightly basis to a police station in Northern Ireland. Granting bail to the value of £750.00 Judge Archer ordered that the case be heard again on November 25.
