Following a review of existing signage and road markings, the Department has taken steps to improve safety in the area.

Newry SDLP Councillor Doire Finn has welcomed confirmation from the Department for Infrastructure that additional road safety measures have been introduced at Doran’s Hill following concerns raised by local residents.

The Department has confirmed that an assessment of the location was carried out using PSNI collision data and found that the area has maintained a good safety record over the past three years. As a result, the site did not meet the criteria for more significant intervention measures.

However, following a review of existing signage and road markings, the Department has taken steps to improve safety in the area. Two pedestrian-in-carriageway signs have recently been installed near the bridge at Doran’s Hill, while additional road narrowing warning signs and "slow" road markings are also being implemented.

The Department has further confirmed that it will request the refreshing of junction and roundabout markings in the area to improve visibility for motorists.

Councillor Doire Finn said that the action on the part of the DfI is welcome

"While residents will be disappointed that the location does not meet the Department's threshold for major road safety interventions, it is welcome that concerns raised by the local community have resulted in practical measures being introduced."

"The installation of additional warning signs and refreshed road markings will help improve awareness for motorists using this route and enhance safety for pedestrians and road users alike."

"I will continue to engage with the Department and monitor the situation closely to ensure any future safety concerns are addressed and that residents voices continue to be heard."
