“A catastrophic descent into disgrace"

FORMER DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson has received a 15 year custodial sentence for a litany of historic sex offences against two complainants. In what was described by Judge Paul Ramsey KC at the sentencing hearing which took place at Newry Crown Court as "a catastrophic descent into disgrace" the former MP for Lagan Valley was arrested for a plethora of offences in 2024.Since this time Donaldson,( 63) of DublinHill Road Dromore consistently denied the charges levelled against him however he was found guilty of all 18 charges his face by a jury of his peers over the course of a trial that lasted 4 weeks.

Now after considering after considering multiple submissions made to him including a presentence report, victim impact statements made by the two complainants in the case and submissions made on the part of the prosecution Judge Ramsey has determined that Donaldson will spend 15 years behind bars for what the Crown Court judge himself described as "a prolonged campaign of sexual abuse against female children"

The sentencing proceedings began in the Newry Crown with Donaldson entering the courtroom flanked by two members of court staff. Sitting with his hands in his lap the former leader of Northern Ireland's largest unionist party listened regarding what his ultimate fate will be in relation to the charges he faces. Judge Ramsey began by giving a brief summation of the facts of the case up until now.

The Crown court judge said that Donaldson has been convicted on June 22 of 18 offences committed against two female complainants that spanned from 1985 to 2008, which included one count of rape. Judge Ramsey described the two woman who came forward to tell police about sexual assaults committed against them when they were children before providing a brief overview of the incidents that lead to the charges which Donaldson was to be sentenced for.

Judge Ramsey then gave a brief overview of Donaldson background providing detail on his political career making note of the fact that he had first been elected to office in 1997 before joining the DUP in 2004, having climbed the party ladder to become its leader in 2021 before stepping down after having been arrested in 2024.Judge Ramsey then read excerpts from the presentence report provided to the court by Donaldson's probation officer which assessed him as having a medium likelihood of reoffending as he had shown a lack of victim empathy and continued to deny the allegations levelled against him even after being found guilty.

Judge Ramsey then read excerpts from two victim impact statements provided two him by complainant A and Complainant B. Complainant A said that she wanted the court to understand that the impact of what Donaldson did to her "did not end when the abuse ended because she grew up feeling ashamed and dirty" and that the abuse had left her with low self-worth, confidence leaving her feeling like she was unworthy of love or happiness. As a result of the abuse she had attended counselling multiple times but had dealt with the abuse by locking it away but i spite of this the abuse still affected her physically saying that she was a light sleeper who sometimes experiences nightmares and that she was absolutely exhausted from carrying the weight of the abuse for so long and had experienced burnout and that the public nature of the case has had a profound impact upon her.

Regarding the trial process which came about as a result of Donaldson's plea of not guilty Complainant A described the trial process as a "living nightmare" and that a deeply private part of her life had been exposed to public speculation and gossip before concluding that the conviction in the case did not erase the affect the abuse had on her and that it has "broken her"In her victim impact statement Complainant B said that she prays that " every day God will let her die." and that the abuse had taken away her ability to trust people.

Before passing sentence Judge Ramsey laid out what he believed to be the aggravating factors in Donaldson's case, those being a breach of trust, the lengthy protracted nature of the offending, the youth victims, the impact the offending had on them and the fact that there were two victims in the case and that the fact that Donaldson had no previous relevant record was not a mitigating factor in the case.

Judge Ramsey also made note of the fact that since having been arrested Donaldson had denied the charges to police and continued to deny having committed the offences to his probation order, with Judge Ramsey commenting that the 63 year old had effectively "doubled down on his denials

"Addressing the defendant before passing sentencing Judge Ramsey asked the former MP to stand up."Jeffrey Mark Donaldson you are now 63 years of age. You have reached the very heights of public office but you have suffered a catastrophic descent into disgrace. You persistently denied the offences but you have been found guilty by jury.Regarding the offences committed against complainant B in the case Judge Ramsey would impose upon Donaldson a maximum custodial sentence of 11 years.

Regarding the offences committed against complainant A in the case Judge Ramsey would impose upon Donaldson a maximum custodial sentence of 4 years. With both sentences to run concurrently Donaldson is expected to spend at least 15 years total behind bars for the crimes he committed. In concluding the case Judge Ramsey reminded all that nothing can be published that could lead to the identification of either of the two complainants in the case who are afforded lifelong anonymity under law.
