Dublin man given prison sentence
A man has been sentenced in connection with a burglary and assault in Cloghoge earlier this year.
Oleksandr Rekun (48) from Dublin was sentenced on Tuesday, at Newry Crown Court for the offences of burglary and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was handed an 18-month sentence and was ordered to spend nine months in custody and nine months on licence.
Outlining the circumstances of the case, Detective Inspector Moffett said: “At approximately 10am on Friday, 13th March 2026 police received a report of an ongoing burglary at a property in the Chancellor's Road area.
“The resident of the property and a relative detained Rekun who had entered the property while it was unoccupied.
“When confronted, a struggle ensued which led to the relative sustaining a bite injury. Police attended and arrested Rekun who was subsequently charged to court.
“A number of items reported missing by the resident were also later located nearby, with substantial damage also caused to a boiler by Rekun.
“This would have been a frightening experience for those who detained Rekun that morning.
“This sentencing offers reassurance that we, along with our partner organisations, remain committed to disrupting the activities of those involved with criminality and will use what means possible to bring people before the courts.”
